I-225 and Parker Road Phase III
Location: Aurora, Colorado
Owner: Colorado Department of Transportation
Size: $58,000,000
Completion: 2002
Description: This project involved the complete reconstruction of the I-225 and Parker Road Interchange, one of the busiest interchanges in southeast metro Denver. Construction included major interchange reconstruction and new Regional Transportation District facilities. Structurally, this reconstruction project included three grade-separated interchanges, 14 bridges, 40 MSE retaining walls, a three-level RTD parking garage, and an undercrossing access and utilities for a light rail transit station. Bridge work included the addition of one post-tensioned cast-in-place seven-span concrete flyover bridge, four cast-in-place single span bridges, and three steel bridges. Other aspects of this project included demolition of two two-span bridges over SH 83, 260,000 cubic yards of earthwork, and utility installation.
The most critical aspect of the project was construction of the 1,400 foot long flyover bridge with minimum clearances and the need to reduce impacts to existing traffic during construction. SEMA designed an overhead truss system to support a 250 foot long span with I-225 and Parker Road traffic underneath. The truss system allowed continuous construction of the flyover and eliminated several project phases.
